Focus Areas for 2025
Topics that will be covered during YTL25 are the following:

-
A Changing Transatlantic World: The German-Canadian relationship is at the heart of a shifting transatlantic landscape. The new US administration is going to have a significant impact on international relations, affecting NATO, trade agreements, and climate policies. At the same time, Germany and Canada are currently preparing for their own Federal elections, which could shape their domestic and foreign policy priorities. With rising geopolitical tensions and economic uncertainties, European-Canadian cooperation also faces new challenges. We will explore how these developments influence the transatlantic alliance and how Germany and Canada can deepen their collaboration in an increasingly complex and puzzling global order.

-
A Transformative Economy: The global economy is undergoing a profound transformation driven by innovation, sustainability, and geopolitical shifts. Advances in artificial intelligence, automation, and digitalization are reshaping business models and work environments, while the push for renewable energy and circular economies challenges traditional industries. Inflation, disrupted supply chains, and economic policy decisions following elections in the U.S., Europe, and Canada will continue to shape economic strategies. What role do Germany and Canada play in this new economic order? We will analyze the key drivers of change, discuss their impact on businesses and policymakers, and explore how closer economic cooperation between Germany and Canada can foster sustainable growth.
-
ESG, DEI – Gone or Only Forgotten? Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles, along with Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives, are increasingly under pressure. In the U.S., these issues have become highly politicized, influencing corporate strategies and public policy. In Europe, regulatory frameworks continue to evolve, but skepticism about their effectiveness is growing. Canada, too, faces questions about the role of ESG and DEI in business and government. Are these frameworks still viable, or are they fading into the background? We will examine the long-term relevance of ESG and DEI, discussing how Germany and Canada can strengthen their cooperation in these areas and promote sustainable standards for businesses and society.

Travel to and from the Study Tour:
All participants are responsible for their travel to Halifax and from Ottawa.
The selected participants can either cover the participation costs themselves or individually find sources of funding to cover the costs through applying to relevant foundations, universities, institutes, organizations and companies. In some cases, the young leader's employer may cover the costs for them. We welcome sponsorship by companies and employers and will provide the participants with a letter of support for this purpose.
